Candidates for “Total Vision Implants”

We are proud to offer both the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL and Crystalens® "Total Vision Implants" at our Irving office serving the Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas area. These revolutionary implants restore our presbyopia and cataract patients’ full range of vision at distances near, far, and in between, without the use of glasses or contacts.

Presbyopia

The best candidates for "Total Vision Implants" are typically in their late 40s or older with some degree of nearsightedness or farsightedness. Most people's near vision remains functional until sometime in their forties. At that time, the eye’s natural crystalline lens begins to gradually thicken and harden, making it difficult for the muscles in the eye to automatically focus the lens. This is known as presbyopia and it happens to everyone at some point, typically while in their forties. Presbyopia’s earliest symptom is difficulty seeing things up close. Presbyopia is most commonly treated with reading glasses or bifocal lenses. A "Total Vision Implant" procedure will help to avoid this need for reading glasses or bifocal lenses, restoring a full range of vision.

Individuals in their late 40s or older with extreme levels of nearsightedness or farsightedness may be better candidates for "Total Vision Implants" than for laser vision correction with LASIK. A complete evaluation will be completed to determine your goals and options for vision correction.

Cataracts

Other excellent candidates for "Total Vision Implants" may be patients who have cataracts. More than 50 percent of people over the age of 60, and a large percentage of those younger, have vision that is impaired by cataracts. Cataracts are so common that everyone will eventually develop a cataract if they live long enough. Vision loss from cataracts is gradual, which is why many patients have difficulty noticing the early symptoms. The length of time for a cataract to develop can vary from a few months to several years. Patients with cataracts usually describe a blurring or clouding of their vision and in later stages may describe it as seeing through a piece of wax paper. Currently, there is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts. Once they form, there is only one way to achieve clear vision again, and that is to surgically remove the cloudy natural crystalline lens of the eye, and replace it with a lens implant.

Implanting a standard single vision intraocular lens implant will only focus the eye in one place, such as distance, and the patient will need glasses for their near and intermediate work. However, using a "Total Vision Implant" will avoid or minimize the need for reading glasses or other corrective lenses, restoring a full range of vision.
